James’ Apprenticeship Blog – Part 5

James Jenkins | August 2023

Hi, my name is James, I started my IT apprenticeship on the 20th of February 2023.
This blog series is about my experiences working as an IT apprentice at a successful law firm in the heart of Plymouth.

Since my last blog post, I have been more actively involved in work sports events. It’s been a lot of fun! Recently, I played rounders against Francis Clark Accountants, with a few colleagues. It was a great time and we all enjoyed ourselves. Additionally, I have been playing football for the firm and we won our last match against the Argyle Community Trust with a score of 7-3. It was an amazing experience, and I was happy to be a part of the team.

Desk Swaps

Apart from sports events, I have also been busy preparing for desk swaps. This month has seen Bright’s newest Trainee Solicitors start their training, and this means I have been tasked with preparing their new desks for their rotations. This has included setting up Ethernet cables and other necessary equipment at the new desks. I was tasked with doing this as quickly as possible to ensure it had no impact on clients and team operations.

I have completed all my Display Screen Equipment (DSE) assessments for this month, except for any new starters joining the firm. I have also been busy this month editing and uploading new documents to our system making sure that the documents are up to date.

A DSE assessment is an assessment of risks associated with the use of Display Screen Equipment for example, PCs, and laptops for the purpose of work, some risks are fatigue, upper limb problems, backache etc, these assessments are important because they ensure that employees have the equipment, facilities, and guidance to be able to work safely and effectively.

Pilgrim Pete Video

I assisted in setting up our Pilgrim Pete charity video with Argyle Community Trust by arranging desks and making the office look presentable. It was a great experience, and I was glad to be a part of it.

I was tasked with ensuring the office looked camera-ready for the advert. A key part of this was the computer set-up, which needed to be set up from scratch where we were filming. I was also tasked with ensuring the server room scene was presentable and that no sensitive information or equipment was on show during filming.

Staff Committee

I am continuing to attend monthly staff committee meetings to update all teams throughout the firm on any issues that have occurred over the last month. For example, I’m tasked with updating the teams on how we have fixed any issues that were mentioned in the previous meeting. Once we have discussed, we move on to looking at if there are any further issues that need resolving.

Although I was not able to attend the last staff committee meeting due to college commitments, I was able to send the chair a report detailing my updates. Issues mentioned in that meeting were reported back to me the following day and I am currently working on these before the next meeting.

Other Work

This month I have also been busy helping Jordan organise the Marketing Material around the office. I have helped clear out and organise his marketing cupboard by emptying the cupboard out completely and changing the layout by adding shelves so there is more storage space and making the cupboard look more organised.

I have also helped in clearing out an unused room for our photographer. Staff who have joined us over the last 6 months require a new staff photo for the website and our marketing material. Jordan has given me the opportunity to help with this setup and learn about the different requirements needed for such a task.

James will be back next month to update us on his progress at the firm. For further news from Bright Solicitors, please visit our News & Events Page.
