James Jenkins | December 2023

Hi, my name is James, I started my IT apprenticeship on the 20th of February 2023.
This blog series is about my experiences working as an IT apprentice at a successful law firm in the heart of Plymouth.

New Responsibilities

Since last month’s blog post, I have been given the responsibility of doing the weekly health and safety walk-around. When doing this, I am looking out for any health and safety hazards from an IT point of view this could be things like wires in a walkway that could be a potential trip hazard or anything laying on wires which could be a fire hazard and to also make sure that behind all the printers are clean to prevent a potential fire.

Training and workshops

This month I have been helping set up Thirdfort training for staff and also setting up meetings in general when needed to, I have also been continuing to catch up with my college coursework this month and I have also been continuing to attend my online workshops, the most recent workshop I attended was about security and legislation and in this workshop, I learned about hacking, copying and copyright, and identity and financial abuses. After my workshop, I was able to research and find out more about each topic.

What I learned from the workshop

Hacking refers to activities that seek to compromise digital devices such as phones, computers, tablets, and even entire networks. An element of hacking is that there must be knowledge that the intended access was unauthorised. Some examples of hacking are viruses, trojans, ransomware, denial of service attacks (DDoS) etc.
Copyright is copying and the illegal transfer of data which is quick and easy using computers and large storage devices such as hard disks. An example of copyright could be copying music or movies without permission.
Identity and financial abuse is where fraudsters use the internet so they can get access to sensitive information, this can be done by phishing can also lead to identity theft.

Staff committee

I have also continued to go to the staff committee meetings and in this month’s meeting, we discussed our usual topics but, as it was our last meeting before our upcoming staff Christmas party, we decided to choose the award categories for this year and choose who was getting which award.

James will be back next month to update us on his progress at the firm. For further news from Bright Solicitors, please visit our News & Events Page.
