Why Now is a Good Time to Set Up an LPA

If setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is something you’ve been meaning to do, now is a really good time to take that step.
Registration times have recently improved, with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) processing applications much quicker than before. In 2022/23, it could take up to 20 weeks to register an LPA. By March 2024, this had reduced to around 12 to 13 weeks — and as of April 2025, the expected timescale is now 8 to 10 weeks.
There are two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney: one for Property and Financial Affairs, and one for Health and Welfare.
The LPA for Property and Financial Affairs allows your attorneys to make decisions about your finances, to manage your bank accounts, make investment decisions and handle property matters.
The LPA for Health and Welfare gives your attorneys authority to make decisions about where you live, who you see, the type of care you receive and can extend to decisions about life-sustaining treatment.
Both types of LPA allow you to appoint people you trust to make important decisions on your behalf if needed. You can find more information about LPAs on our website.
Getting everything organised now can offer peace of mind for you and your loved ones in the future.
